Raja Gopuram

( Western Tower called as Mela Gopuram)

Normally the Raja Gopuram will be in the eastern side of the temples in Tamilnadu. But in Tiruchendur alone the Raja Gopuram is in the western side.   It is said the Raja  Gopuram  was  not  erected on eastern side  since  the  sea  is  very nearer   in the eastern side, the basement was not strong with stone rocks and also the  possibility of danger to the tower due to sea erosion.

Mela  Gopuram has nine storeys and it is about  137 feet  high  above  Yalimattam, 90 feet long  North  to  south and 65 feet broad east to west.  At the top of the  Gopuram  the  width  is  20 feet and length is 49 feet.   To  indicate  that  the Gopuram  consists of  9  storeys there are nine Kalasams  (copper finial stoopies) at the top of the Gopuram.

Shanmugha Vilasa Mandapam

The Principal entrance to the temple is facing south. Magnificent Shanmugha Vilasam is the  frontal  adjunct to the main Temple.  The  Mandapam is 120 feet long, 86 feet broad and supported by 124 columns.

Those who observe  fast to get relief from their diseases will stay in this Mandapam which is filled with  sea  breeze.   This mandapam originally  with  white  stones was converted into granite stones by  Mauna Swami. The  granite  roof  of  the  Mandapam  without pillars  bear testimony to the excellent architecture technology of ancient days.

Looking from the Shanmugha Vilasa Mapapam one  can worship Lord Shanmuga with his  consorts   in  the  Mahara  Mandapam. If we look at north from the Shanmugha Vilasa   Mandapam  we   can   see  Arulmigu   Arumugha   Peruman   seating in  the Mandapam with  golden  pillars.  Before climbing down the steps, the  gents  should remove  their shirts  and  banians.  The procedure adopted by the Kerala Kings who ruled this place is still in vogue.
