Thirunavukkarasar who lived during 7th century A.D has stated “Nam Senthil Meya Valli Manavalar Thathai Kandai”. The cave temple might have been constructed during this period.

Since Adi Sankarar has mentioned about the cave temple in his  Tiruchendur Subramania  Pujangam this temple might have been constructed prior to his period. The inscription in the temple shows that  Varaguna Pandiyan II was performing poojas and festivals during 9th century A.D.

Inscriptions  also  show that Pandiyan Maravarman  helped  in  conducting pooja during 13th centruy A.D

Inscriptions mention about the donations given by Marthandavarman during 18th century A.D

During 1648 A.D the incident of looting by Dutch Pirates  took  place.   During this time there was Nayakars rule. You  can  even  now  see   the  colour  paintings of Nayakar age in the sixth stage of the Raja Gopuram.
